How to make Simple Syrup
Simple syrup is one of the most important ingredients to keep around a home bar. Essentially, simple syrup and lemon juice are used to balance flavors in cocktails much like how salt and pepper is used in cooking. By using Simple Syrup, you can balance the sweetness of your cocktail without getting sugar granules in the end result.
Simple syrup is made of sugar and water at a 1:1 ratio! To make it at home, add 1 part sugar and 1 part water to a pan. Bring mixture up to a simmer and heat it until sugar is completely dissolved.
You can, but it usually contains preservatives and aromas you might not want in your drinks. Plus, making it at home is super simple and way more cost effective.
In baking, it’s commonly used to give bread, cakes and pastries a nice sheen. In cocktails, we use simple syrup to balance flavors and add sweetness to drinks. The reason we use simple syrup rather than just sugar is that syrup won’t leave you with a drink full of sugar granules.
Homemade simple syrup usually lasts for about a week in the fridge. By adding a squeeze of lemon or a splash of vodka to the syrup you can make it last a bit longer. To tell if your syrup has gone bad, look for tiny air bubbles in the container. If you see these bubbles it usually means that the syrup has started fermenting and gone bad.
