The Fiery Mule offers a peppery twist on a classic Moscow Mule cocktail, turning an already ginger-spiced vodka cocktail into something with serious heat.
This easy cocktail mixes Absolut Peppar, lime juice and Peri Peri hot sauce, then tops it with spicy ginger beer, all built directly in a copper or stainless steel mule mug filled with ice cubes.
The Fiery Mule is one helluva spicy summer cocktail – whether it’s hot outside or not, this one turns up the heat in the glass… or mule mug, to be more precise.

All about the Fiery Mule Cocktail
The Fiery Mule is a twist on the classic Moscow Mule. While the original mixes vodka and lime juice topped with ginger beer, the Fiery Mule uses pepper‑flavored vodka and lime juice, with the addition of Peri Peri hot sauce, then tops it with ginger beer for extra spice.
Just like the classic, the Fiery Mule is served in a signature mule mug (copper or stainless steel) over ice, but here it’s garnished with a fresh chili instead of the usual lime wedge.
The Fiery Mule is spicy, with the distinct taste of fresh black peppercorns, the rich, spicy sweetness of ginger beer, and the sharp, zesty edge of fresh lime juice.
“Sweet, fiery ginger beer balanced out by that black pepper spice coming from Absolut Peppar – it’s another banger!” shares Ricardo ‘Rico’ Dynan, Bartender and Absolut Global Brand Ambassador.
“I’m not even upset about how much my mouth has been blown off,” says Rico. “That Peri Peri is a slow burner – it’s a creeper. That cracked black pepper coming from the Absolut Peppar is insane. If you can handle the heat, this is a pure porch pounder.”
Although there’s no documented history for the Fiery Mule, it was most likely created in late 2020 for an episode of Absolut Drinks with Rico, which was published on YouTube in March 2021.
As for its inspiration, the original Moscow Mule – despite the many competing origin stories – is widely believed to have been born in the early 1940s in Los Angeles, at a pub on the Sunset Strip in Hollywood.
- Use fresh lime juice
Squeeze fresh lime juice rather than using bottled – it adds a bright, zesty edge that cuts through the heat and ties the whole drink together. - Choose ginger beer, not ginger ale
Always use ginger beer instead of ginger ale. Ginger beer has a spicier, more robust ginger kick that stands up to the Absolut Peppar and Peri Peri hot sauce. - Chill your mule mug
Place your copper or stainless steel mule mug in the freezer for 15–30 minutes before making your Fiery Mule. A chilled mug keeps the drink colder for longer. - Pick Peri Peri hot sauce (not just any hot sauce)
Opt for a Peri Peri hot sauce. Peri Peri brings a layered flavor profile with citrus, garlic, and herbs that complements the lime and ginger beer instead of just adding heat.

Fiery Mule FAQ
A classic Moscow Mule is made with vodka, lime juice and ginger beer in a mule mug.
The Fiery Mule turns things up by swapping in pepper‑flavored vodka (Absolut Peppar) and adding Peri Peri hot sauce, so you get the same lime‑and‑ginger beer base, but with a serious pepper and chili bite.
You don’t have to use fresh lime juice in a Fiery Mule, but it makes a big difference. Freshly squeezed lime gives a brighter, sharper citrus edge that cuts through the heat and really lifts the drink in a way bottled lime juice can’t match.
If you don’t have a mule mug, a highball glass is your best bet, but a Collins glass or sturdy rocks glass also works. Just fill it with ice cubes and build the Fiery Mule the same way you would in a traditional mug.
Peri Peri hot sauce is the go‑to for a Fiery Mule. Its layered flavor – citrus, garlic, herbs and chili heat – complements the lime and ginger beer instead of just adding spice. If you can’t find Peri Peri hot sauce, choose a hot sauce with a similar bright, tangy profile rather than a smoky or vinegar-heavy one.
