ALL ABOUT THE BLOODY BRAIN SHOT
The Bloody Brain is a Halloween shot made with vodka, cream liqueur, grenadine and lime juice. When the ingredients are layered correctly, the shot resembles a bleeding brain suspended in the glass, which is entirely the point.
Looks aside, the Bloody Brain is sweet and delicious. Absolut Wild Berri brings a bold berry compote flavor, complemented by the smooth creaminess of the cream liqueur. Grenadine adds a rich, syrupy sweetness while fresh lime juice cuts through with just enough acidity to keep it balanced. Just close your eyes when you drink it.
There’s no documented history for the Bloody Brain or Bleeding Brain shot, but it likely emerged during the 2020s.
In the summer of 2025, Ricardo ‘Rico’ Dynan, Bartender and Absolut Global Brand Ambassador, together with a daring crew of friends were given the challenge to find the world’s worst cocktail to be filmed for an episode of Absolut Drinks with Rico. The Bloody Brain was one of the shots.
A reminder to never judge a shot by its appearance, much to their surprise, everyone in the crew enjoyed the shot!
Joining Rico was Mason Hereford and Lauren Agudo from Turkey and the Wolf, Phil Cenac from Hungry Eyes, Nathan Barfield from Hot Stuff, and Colleen Quarls from Molly’s Rise and Shine.
The Bloody Brain is all about the effect. Here’s how to nail it.
- Chill your vodka
The Bloody Brain is best served cold – put your bottle of Absolut Wild Berri in the freezer for at least 30 minutes before serving. A cold shot makes all the difference. - Order matters I
f you want that floating brain effect, the order you add the ingredients is everything. Start with Absolut Wild Berri and lime juice, then carefully add the Irish cream liqueur on top – it needs to float in the glass to create the effect. - Use a squeeze bottle for the Irish cream
For the most convincing brain-like effect, pour the Irish cream liqueur through a plastic squeeze bottle rather than directly from the bottle. It gives you more control and helps build that signature look one drop at a time.
- Swap Absolut Wild Berri for another flavored vodka
Our recipe uses Absolut Wild Berri, but feel free to experiment with another berry-flavored vodka – Absolut Raspberri works particularly well as an alternative. - Brain Hemorrhage (aka Alien Brain Hemorrhage)
Every bit as creepy and delicious as the Bloody Brain but with its own identity. Made with 20ml peach schnapps, 10ml Irish cream liqueur, 10ml vodka and 5ml grenadine, layered in the same way for a similarly unsettling effect. - Zombie Brain Similar to the Brain Hemorrhage but with the addition of crème de menthe for that distinctly zombie-green color. Mix 30ml peach schnapps, 15ml Irish cream liqueur, 7.5ml crème de menthe and 7.5ml grenadine. Perfect for when the Bloody Brain just isn’t creepy enough.
The Bloody Brain should be served in a clear shot glass to show off the “brain” in all its g(l)ory.
Bloody Brain Shot FAQ
Simply mix 5 parts Absolut Wild Berri, 1/2 part Lime Juice, 1 part Irish Cream Liqueur and a splash Grenadine for each shot.
Irish Cream contains dairy, which curdles when mixed with acid (e.g., lime juice). This chemical reaction creates clumps and strands that float in the shot — resulting in the creepy, brain-like effect.
