The Vodka Lime is an easy-to-make vodka cocktail with just two ingredients.

Sometimes referred to as a Vodka Gimlet, “The Vodka Lime is a very simple twist on a Gimlet, served on the rocks instead of straight up,” shares Ricardo ‘Rico’ Dynan, Bartender and Absolut Global Brand Ambassador.

“It’s one of the easiest drinks to make. So, if you’ve got some lime cordial knocking around, just go for it,” he encourages. OK then, let’s get mixing!

What is a Vodka Lime Cocktail?

A Vodka Lime is a vodka cocktail made with just two ingredients – vodka and lime cordial. It’s inspired by the Gimlet, a classic cocktail made with gin and lime cordial.

What Does a Vodka Lime Drink Taste Like?

“Super citrusy, super fruity – elevated with the vodka coming through,” says Rico.

The History of the Vodka Lime

Although there isn’t any documented history for the Vodka Lime, the Vodka Lime is a vodka variation of a Gimlet cocktail. The origins of the Gimlet date back to the 19th century.

Vodka’s popularity soared in the ’70s and ’80s, frequently replacing gin as the go-to spirit in cocktails. It’s likely that the Vodka Lime emerged during this era.

Tips for Making the Perfect Vodka Lime Cocktail

Even though this drink has just two ingredients, the difference between a so-so drink and an incredible drink is all about the details. Here’s two tips to consider for making the perfect Vodka Lime:

  • Pre-chill your glassware
It’s a small but oh-so important detail when it comes to the overall drink experience. Pre-chill your rocks glass in the freezer 30 minutes before making the drink. Trust us, it makes for a better drink.
  • Stir…but not too much
As you stir the cocktail in the mixing glass, aim to chill it just right. Don’t overdo it and end up with a watered-down drink. Just press the back of your hand against the glass – when it feels cold, you’re all set!

  • Choose “the best” Lime Cordial
If you have a favorite brand of Lime Cordial, that’s the one you want to use in your drink. As we often say, when there’s just two ingredients, it’s vital to use the best quality ingredients.

Variations of a Vodka Lime Cocktail

  • Vodka Lime with Lime Flavored Vodka
If you love the taste of lime, follow the recipe above but swap out Absolut Vodka for lime vodka. Lime vodka and lime cordial garnished with a lime wheel – there’s no such thing as too much lime.
  • Use Fresh Lime Juice
Swap Lime Cordial for Lime Juice for a fresher, zestier drink. Which version is better? That’s totally up to you – it’s all about personal taste.
  • Try different flavored cordials
Why not mix things up by experimenting with different flavored cordials? Rico recommends experimenting with raspberry or blackcurrant cordial. Try different cordials and create your own favorite drink.

Serving and Garnish Ideas for a Vodka Lime Cocktail

  • We recommend serving the Vodka Lime on the rocks in a rocks glass.
  • To garnish, you can’t beat a simple and timeless lime wheel. Alternatively, try a lime twist or a lime wedge instead of a lime wheel. Just remember, whatever you choose, keep it lime!
