All about the Tequila Mockingbird
The Tequila Mockingbird is a minty, herbaceous tequila cocktail with a citrus twist. This shaken cocktail mixes Reposado tequila, crème de menthe(sweet green mint liqueur), lime juice, and simple syrup.
It stands out not only for its bright green color but also for its unique combination of ingredients, offering herbal notes and minty sweetness.
A minty Margarita, perhaps? The Tequila Mockingbird combines sweet, herbal, and minty notes with the warm agave and caramel-honey tones of Reposado tequila. The zesty lime juice cuts through both, resulting an unexpected flavor combo that works surprisingly very well, especially for mint lovers.
The exact origin of the Tequila Mockingbird cocktail is unknown, but it’s generally believed to have been created in the 1960s as a playful nod to a popular novel.
- Fine strain your cocktail
To achieve a smooth consistency and avoid ice shards in your drink, fine strain your drink. To do this, hold the shaker tin in one hand and place the Hawthorne strainer over its opening. With your other hand, hold the fine-mesh strainer above your cocktail glass. Pour the cocktail through both strainers to ensure a smooth drink without ice shards. - Chill your glassware
Place your cocktail glass or coupe glass in the freezer for about 30 minutes before mixing your shake. A chilled glass is a wonderful touch that adds to the drinking experience. - Choose your tequila wisely
We recommend choosing a small-batch Reposado Tequila aged 8-11 months. It brings depth to your drink and blends beautifully with the mint liqueur. - Fresh lime juice
We say it every time and we’ll never stop saying it – use fresh lime juice. This means, leaving the store bought bottled lime juice and making your own lime juice instead.Grab a couple of limes and a citrus press (or citrus elbow). Fresh lime juice is tastier and zestier and that’s exactly what’s needed to cut through the tequila and green mint liqueur.
- With white créme de menthe
A popular variation of the Tequila Mockingbird substitutes green crème de menthe with white crème de menthe. Both have the same taste, but one is white and the other is green. Some prefer a “less loud” appearance for their drink, while others enjoy the vibrant look. - Tequila Mockingbird with Watermelon and Jalapeño
The most popular variation of traditional Tequila Mockingbird is this summer version made with Blanco Tequila, fresh muddled watermelon and a slice of jalapeño. It shares very little in common with the mint liqueur version but it’s an incredible drink no less. Here’s what you need:60 ml Blanco Tequila
3-4 cubes Fresh Watermelon
1 slice Jalapeño
22.5 ml Lime Juice
22.5 ml Simple Syrup (or Agave Nectar)
Ice CubesHere’s how to make a Tequila Mockingbird with watermelon:
- Muddle the watermelon and jalapeño together with simple syrup in your shaker.
- Add all the ingredients into the shaker and fill with ice cubes.
- Shake and strain into a rocks glass filled with ice.
- We recommend serving a Tequila Mockingbird in either a chilled coupe glass or a chilled cocktail glass.
- Since there are so many strong flavors going on, we recommend garnishing with only a single mint leaf. It looks elegant and the aromas accentuate those of the green mint liqueur.
- If, however, you want the mint aroma to be even stronger, opt for a sprig of mint instead of a mint leaf.
- You can also accentuate the flavors and aromas of lime instead of mint but garnishing your drink with a lime wheel perched on the side of your glass.
