All about the ST. Patrick’s
The St. Patrick’s is a modern cocktail made with equal parts Irish whiskey, crème de menthe (green mint liqueur), and green chartreuse.
Known for its eye-catching, almost-neon green color and complex, minty, herbal taste, the St. Patrick’s can can be made stirred or shaken.
Minty, herbal and spirit-forward. You can taste the minty sweetness of crème de menthe with the herbal depth of green chartreuse. The Irish Whiskey adds a smooth, rich undertone, bringing warmth and depth to the drink, complementing the mint and herbal notes with its characteristic malt and vanilla flavors.
The history of the St. Patrick’s cocktail isn’t documented, but it’s known to be a relatively new creation, likely originating in the early-mid 2000s.
- Pre-chill your glassware
Pre-chill your glassware (i.e. cocktail glass or coupe glass) by placing your glass in the freezer for approximately 30 minutes. For stirred drinks like the St. Patrick’s cocktail, chilled glassware not only keeps your drink cold but also elevates the overall drinking experience by maintaining optimal temperature throughout every sip.
- Irish whiskey
While you could use any type of whiskey for a St. Patrick’s, it simply wouldn’t be the same without Irish whiskey! We recommend Jameson Irish Whiskey, which offers a spicy and nutty base with lovely vanilla and honey notes.
- Shaken, not stirred
While we prefer making the a St. Patrick’s cocktail as a stirred cocktail in a mixing glass, you can also create a shaken version. Simply add ice cubes into a cocktail shaker then measure and pour equal parts of each alcohol. Shake until ice cold, then strain into a chilled cocktail glass.Shaking the St. Patrick’s cocktail creates a colder, frothy texture. Stirring results in a smoother drink, preserving individual ingredient notes for a layered taste experience. The choice is yours!
- With lime juice and maraschino liqueur
This variation of a St Patrick’s cocktail mixes Irish whiskey and green chartreuse, but swaps crème de menthe for maraschino liqueur with a touch a lime juice. Here’s how to make it:
- Fill a cocktail shaker with ice cubes.
- Measure and add 30 ml Irish whiskey, 15 ml green chartreuse and 15 ml maraschino liqueur into the shaker.
- Shake until the shaker is frosty on the outside.
- Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
- Garnish with a slice of lime and a sprig of rosemary.
- Shamrock Sour
There are several recipes and variations of the Shamrock Sour, all centered around Irish whiskey as the main base. The version I like best is similar to the drink above, but it omits the maraschino liqueur and swaps lime juice for lemon juice. Here’s how to make a Shamrock Sour:
- Fill a cocktail shaker with ice cubes.
- Measure and add 45 ml Irish whiskey, 22.5 ml lemon juice, 15 ml green chartreuse and 15 ml simple syrup into the shaker.
- Shake until the shaker is ice cold.
- Strain the cocktail into a rocks glass with ice cubes.
- Garnish with a maraschino cherry.
- We suggest serving the St. Patrick’s cocktail in a chilled cocktail glass or coupe glass.
- While our recipe doesn’t include a garnish, feel free to add one – something green, of course! For example, you could garnish your drink with a single mint leaf, placed directly into your glass.
- If you’re looking for something more, a sprig of mint or a sprig of rosemary both work like a charm.
- A maraschino cherry is a popular garnish for the Shamrock Sour, so you could garnish your St. Patrick’s cocktail with a single maraschino cherry too.
