The Flying Grasshopper is a vodka cocktail and a variation of the classic after-dinner cocktail, the Grasshopper.
Both the Flying Grasshopper and original Grasshopper are three-ingredient cocktails but where the Grasshopper is a shaken cocktail made with green mint liqueur, white cocoa liqueur, and single cream, the Flying Grasshopper is a stirred cocktail made with vodka, with green mint liqueur and white cocoa liqueur.

All about the Flying Grasshopper
The Flying Grasshopper is a stirred cocktail made with vodka, green mint liqueur and white cacao liqueur and is a variation of the classic shaken cocktail, the Grasshopper.
A decadent, creamy dessert cocktail reminiscent of mint-chocolate ice cream. The addition of vodka adds a wonderful smoothness to an already buttery smooth cocktail.
The exact history of the Flying Grasshopper is hard to pinpoint but it’s believed this riff on the classic Grasshopper came about sometime during the 1970s.
As for the Grasshopper, sources suggest it was invented in 1918 or 1919 in New Orleans, although the earliest documented recipe for a Grasshopper appears in a 1908 cocktail book but was made with just two ingredients (green mint liqueur and white cacao liqueur) instead of the three ingredients we know today.
- Stir until you achieve the perfect dilution and temperature
Stir the Flying Grasshopper until it’s perfectly chilled and you achieve the perfect dilution. What’s the perfect dilution, you ask? It’s when you taste the cocktail by using the bar spoon to place a small amount on the back of your hand and you like what you taste!
- Serve your Grasshopper in a chilled glass
Pop your martini glass in the freezer approximately 30 minutes beforehand. A chilled glass gives your drink that extra touch, enhancing the overall drink experience.
- The Grasshopper
The Flying Grasshopper is, of course, a variation of the original Grasshopper so it’s only fair that we give credit where credit is due!
The Grasshopper mixes green mint liqueur, white cocoa liqueur, and single cream for the ultimate after-dinner cocktail. Mint-chocolate ice cream, anyone? Check out the drink recipe for a classic Grasshopper! - Add cream to the mix
While the drink recipe on this page omits the single cream found in the original Grasshopper, you can easily incorporate it into the Flying Grasshopper by using the same measurement as the green mint liqueur and white cocoa liqueur.
This addition will give your Flying Grasshopper a creamy, dessert texture like the original.
- We recommend serving the Flying Grasshopper in a chilled cocktail glass, such as a martini glass.
- Although our recipe does not include a garnish, a single mint leaf is a nice touch and accentuates those minty aromas.
- For a more decadent touch, grate some chocolate (white or dark – it’s your choice!) over the top of your drink.
