All about the Envy Cocktail
An Envy is a lesser known cocktail made with vodka, lime juice and three different types of liqueur – green melon liqueur, hazelnut liqueur and peach liqueur. Unmissable due to its bright neon-green color, the Envy is shaken with ice and then fine strained into a cocktail glass.
The flavor of sweet green melon takes the main focus, complemented by subtle notes of peach and nutty warmth of hazelnut, with a welcome zesty acidity from the lime juice. Overall, the Envy is smooth-sipping, leaning towards the sweeter side, but undeniably delicious.
In fact, the Envy is one of the best examples of how to successfully use the often tricky-to-mix green melon liqueur to create a delicious and complex cocktail that truly works.
Unfortunately, there’s little to no information available about the history or origin of this obscure cocktail.
- Fine strain
We highly recommend fine straining your Envy cocktail. This means using both a Hawthorne strainer and a fine mesh strainer together when pouring your cocktail to ensure you don’t end up with any ice shards in your drink. Fine straining your cocktail leads to a finer, smoother sip. - Fresh lime juice
We pretty much always suggest using fresh citrus juice when you’re mixing up cocktails, and it’s especially important when you’re dealing with three different liqueurs. You need that fresh, zesty acidity from real citrus to balance out the sweetness. So, skip the bottled stuff from the supermarket and squeeze a couple of limes instead.
- Make it to your liking
Although our drink recipe for an Envy calls for 10 ml of lime juice, if you want more acidity to cut through the sweetness, feel free to add more lime juice. Likewise, many people find the taste of green melon liqueur sweet and overpowering, so feel free to adjust it to your taste preferences. - Chill your glassware
Pre-chilling your cocktail glass in the freezer 30 minutes beforehand is a nice little touch that adds to a great drinking experience.
- We recommend serving the Envy cocktail in either a pre-chilled cocktail glass or martini glass. It’s an elegant but playful sipper, so either glass works well.
- Our drink recipe does not include a garnish, however, a slice of green melon works well. Alternatively, you could also use a peach wedge to accentuate the peach liqueur.
- If you want to use a garnish that’s more elegant and eye-catching, an edible flower (ideally, green or yellow) adds a nice visual touch.
