The History of the Chocolate Martini Cocktail
The most popular story goes that one evening in 1955, while a Hollywood classic was being filmed in and around Marfa, Texas, two movie icons decided to blend their mutual passion for chocolate and martinis. They mixed chocolate liqueur and chocolate syrup into a classic Vodka Martini and right then and there, the Chocolate Martini was said to be born. Whether it’s true or not, everyone loves a good story.
Tips for Making the Perfect Chocolate Martini Cocktail
- Pre-chill your Martini Glass
A chilled martini glass maintains the drink’s smooth texture and prevents it from warming too quickly, ensuring every sip is as equally perfect as the first. Place your glassware in a freezer 30 minutes before serving.
Variations of a Chocolate Martini
- Chocolate Martini with Irish Cream
Swap Crème de cacao for Irish Cream for a creamier, vanilla-flavored Chocolate Martini. Trust us, it’s every bit as decadent! - Chocolate Martini with Crème de menthe
Love the taste of mint chocolate? Replace Crème de cacao for Crème de menthe (French for “mint cream”) and you’ve now got an indulgent and minty-sweet Chocolate Martini.
Serving and Garnish Ideas for a Chocolate Martini
There are endless ways you can garnish your cocktail to add new elements and extra indulgence to your drink. Here’s a handful of suggestions:
- Dark, white, almond…whichever chocolate you decide to grate and garnish on top your drink is up to you! You can’t do wrong when it comes to chocolate.
- Garnish your drink with a dehydrated orange wheel to give your Chocolate Martini a nod to the beloved flavor of chocolate orange.
- There’s no such thing as too much chocolate. Swirl some chocolate sauce inside your martini glass before you pour your cocktail.
- More chocolate you say. Dip the rim of your martini glass in cocoa powder. To do this, pour some chocolate liqueur onto a plate, and cocoa powder on another plate. First, dip the rim of your glass into the chocolate liqueur and then into the cocoa powder. Oh my!
- Add some chocolate bitters instead of shaved chocolate. This will balance out some of the sweetness and add some complexity to your drink.
Chocolate Martini FAQ
Either version can be used in a Chocolate Martini. The choice is yours and it comes down to preference.
Dark Crème de Cacao is richer, while White Crème de Cacao is subtler in flavor. It’s important to note that White Crème de Cacao is clear, not white, nor does it taste like white chocolate. Both products are dark chocolate flavored.
Crème de Cacao is a sweet chocolate liqueur with a usually higher sugar content, available in both dark and white (clear) versions. On the other hand, “chocolate liqueur” refers to any alcoholic drink infused with chocolate flavor.
Unlike many other martinis which can be shaken or stirred depending on preference, the Chocolate Martini should always be shaken. When you shake a cocktail, you’re adding air to the drink. The air will give your drink that velvety texture that you want in a Chocolate Martini.
