All about the Caipiroska
Also known as a Caipivodka, the Caipiroska is a popular South American cocktail, and a twist on a Caipirinha (Brazil’s national cocktail)made with vodka instead of the Brazilian spirit, cachaça.
Built directly in the glass, the Caipiroska is made by muddling lime wedges in a rocks glass, then adding simple syrup, and vodka, before topping with crushed ice. It’s a perfect summer drink!
A Caipiroska bursts with lively, tangy brightness from fresh lime, sweetened by by simple syrup held down by the smoothness of vodka.
The trinity of vodka, lime juice and simple syrup is behind some of the world’s most beloved cocktails, and the Caipiroska is no exception.
The Caipiroska is a Brazilian cocktail that dates back to the 1980s, emerging as a popular alternative to the traditional Caipirinha by substituting vodka for cachaça.
This variation gained popularity as international vodka brands entered the South American market in the 80s, appealing to those who preferred a more neutral flavor.
- Muddle well
Using a muddler, gently press and twist lime wedges to release the juice and oils without getting the bitterness from the pith. - Make your own simple syrup
With a drink as easy to make as the Caipiroska and with so few ingredients, the quality of your ingredients is paramount. Make your own simple syrup, which takes just 2 minutes. - Chill your glass first
The difference between an OK drink and a great way is all about the details. Pre-chill your rocks glass by placing it in the freezer for approximately 30 minutes beforehand. - Crushed ice, not ice cubes
Crushed ice in a Caipiroska chills the drink quickly and evenly, allowing the lime and vodka flavors to meld beautifully, creating a perfect sipping experience.

-
In addition to the muddled fresh lime quarters at the bottom, garnish your Caipiroska with a lime wedge placed on top of the crushed ice.
-
To introduce a herbal element, garnish with a sprig of mint or basil leaves, which add a new layer of aroma to the drink.
-
If you’re using flavored vodka (see the Variations section above), customize your Caipiroska by muddling and garnishing with fruits that complement the vodka’s flavor. For instance, with mango-flavored vodka, muddle fresh mango chunks and garnish with a mango wedge.
